The Sedation Spectrum in Dentistry

No SedationMild Sedation

Mild Sedation

Achieved with:
Nitrous Oxide or low dose oral medication (Versed or Halcyon)

Best for:
Mildly anxious person undergoing short dental appointment (< 1 hour)

IV Moderate Sedation LightMediumHeavy

IV Moderate Sedation

Depending on dose patient can be lightly to heavily moderately sedated.

IV trained dentists can provide up to medium moderate sedation with a single drug usually Midazolam.

Patients will be fully conscious, sleeping, but rousable, and breathing easily on their own.

Best for:
Mild to moderately anxious patients undergoing longer appointments (3-4 hours max.)

Anyone requiring dental work, whether anxious or not, who would prefer to relax and have their work done in one longer appointment vs. many shorter ones.

Deep Sedation MildModerateDeep

Deep Sedation

Deep sedation can only be performed by Dental or Medical Anesthesiologists using multiple drugs- Propofol, Ketamine, Fentanyl, Midazolam, etc...

Patients will be conscious, deeply sleeping, not rousable, and breathing on their own.

Best for:
Moderately to severely anxious patients undergoing longer appointments (3-4 hours max.)

Generally mild to moderate deep sedation is the goal.

General AnestheticNo Go Zone

General Anesthetic

General Anesthetic can only be performed by Dental or Medical Anesthesiologists using multiple IV and inhalation drugs.

Patients will be unconscious, deeply sleeping, not rousable, and not breathing on their own.

Best for:
Special situations and any person that is unable to co-operate or tolerate the placement of an IV line.

Generally not required for most patients in order to receive dental care.
